Butter: sticks, cups and grams
One stick of US butter weighs 113 grams, which is ½ cup or 8 tablespoons, so 1 cup of butter (two sticks) weighs 226 g.
US butter wrappers are marked in tablespoons, so for small amounts you just cut at the line. Each tablespoon weighs about 14 g.

Weights from the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart, checked October 7, 2026. King Arthur Baking lists “Butter” at 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup) = 113 g. Grams per cup is worked out from their figure; ounces are converted from grams.
Long sticks and short sticks
American butter comes in two shapes: long, slim sticks (sometimes called Elgin style), common in most of the country, and short, stubby ones (Western-pack), common out West. They look different in the fridge, but both are 4 ounces, ½ cup and 8 tablespoons.
European 250 g blocks
Outside the US, butter usually comes in 250 g blocks. One block is 2.2 US sticks, or 1 cup + 1 tbsp + 2 tsp. Going the other way, a recipe asking for 100 g of butter wants about 7 tablespoons, a little less than one stick.
Melted butter
When a recipe says “½ cup butter, melted”, measure a stick and then melt it. Weighing is the easiest route either way: the grams don't change when butter melts. Softened butter is measured the same way as cold.
