Ounces to grams
1 ounce is 28.35 grams, so multiply ounces by 28.35 to get grams; 1 pound (16 ounces) is 453.6 grams.
These are weight ounces, the ones on a kitchen scale and a package label. Fluid ounces measure volume and can't be turned into grams without knowing the ingredient; ounces in a cup explains the difference.

Rounding in recipes
For everyday cooking, 28 g to the ounce is plenty accurate, and 30 g is fine for mental math. Older British cookbooks often printed 25 g for an ounce so the metric column came out in round numbers. Those recipes are balanced within each column, so follow one system all the way through rather than mixing.
Pounds and kilograms
A kilogram is 2.2 pounds, so a 500 g package is about 1.1 lb and a 1 lb package is 454 g. When a recipe says “1 lb ground beef” and your store sells 500 g packs, one pack is close enough.
Why bakers switch to grams
Grams are smaller than ounces, so you rarely need fractions, and adding up a recipe is simple arithmetic. Most kitchen scales switch between the two with one button. For turning cups into weights, use the grams to cups chart.
ReelMeal's Metric setting shows ounces and pounds in any imported recipe as grams and kilograms, and Imperial does the reverse, so you can cook from your scale either way.
