Brown sugar: grams to cups
1 cup of packed brown sugar weighs 213 grams, light or dark, so 100 g of brown sugar is 0.47 cups, just under ½ cup.
“Packed” is the important word. Brown sugar is moist and springy, and a cup filled loosely weighs a good deal less. Press it into the cup firmly enough that it holds the cup's shape when you tip it out.

Weights from the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart, checked October 7, 2026. King Arthur Baking lists “Brown sugar (dark or light, packed)” at 1 cup = 213 g. Grams per cup is worked out from their figure; ounces are converted from grams.
Light or dark
Dark brown sugar has more molasses than light, so it tastes deeper and is a touch moister. King Arthur gives both the same weight per cup, and they swap one for one; expect a darker, more caramel-tasting result with dark.
Weighing skips the packing
On a scale you don't pack anything: 213 g is a cup however you get it into the bowl. That helps most when the sugar has dried into lumps that won't press evenly into a cup. To soften hardened brown sugar, seal it in a container with a slice of bread or a damp paper towel overnight.
British recipes
UK recipes call for light or dark soft brown sugar, or muscovado. They're given in grams, so weigh out the amount listed and use American brown sugar of the matching shade. For white sugar, see sugar grams to cups.
ReelMeal turns cookie and cake videos into written recipes, so “a scoop of brown sugar” in a voiceover becomes an amount you can measure.
