Milliliters to cups
1 US cup is 236.6 ml, so divide milliliters by 236.6 to get cups: 250 ml is 1.06 cups and 500 ml is 2.11 cups.
A decimal like 0.42 cups isn't much use at the counter, so the chart also gives each amount the way you'd measure it with standard cups and spoons.

Three cups that aren't quite the same
The US customary cup in American recipes is 236.6 ml. US nutrition labels round it to 240 ml. Australia, New Zealand and Canada use a 250 ml metric cup.
The biggest gap, 13 ml, is less than a tablespoon, so a recipe written for one cup works with another for most cooking. For baking, use the cup the recipe was written for, or better, weigh the dry ingredients with the grams to cups chart.
Liters to cups
1 liter is 4.23 US cups, which you'd measure as 4 cups + 3 tbsp + 2 tsp. Half a liter is 2 cups + 1 tbsp + 2 tsp. In soup, call a liter 4 cups and carry on.
No metric jug?
Many US measuring jugs have milliliters printed on the other side. If yours doesn't, use spoons for small amounts: a tablespoon is about 15 ml and a teaspoon about 5 ml. The tablespoons to ml page has the exact figures.
ReelMeal's Units setting converts imported recipes for you: Metric shows cups as milliliters, and Imperial turns milliliters back into fluid ounces and quarts.
