How many cups in a quart?
There are 4 cups in 1 US quart, which is also 2 pints, 32 fluid ounces or 946 ml.
The name gives it away: a quart is a quarter of a gallon. Every step down the ladder halves the amount, so a gallon is 16 cups, a half gallon 8, a quart 4, a pint 2 and then a single cup.

Is a quart the same as a liter?
Close, but no. A liter is 1.06 US quarts, about 4.23 cups. In soups, stocks and braises you can swap one for the other without a second thought. In baking, or anything set with gelatin, measure the actual amount.
Dry quarts and UK quarts
Berries and cherry tomatoes in the US are sold by the dry pint and dry quart. A dry quart is a slightly bigger unit (1.1 L) used only for produce; when a recipe says “1 quart of stock” it means the liquid quart.
The UK (imperial) quart is bigger again: 1.14 L, or about 4.8 US cups. You'll mostly meet it in older British recipes.
Pints
A US pint is 2 cups (473 ml). A UK pint is 568 ml, about 2.4 US cups, which is why a pint of milk or beer in Britain looks generous to American eyes. For bigger amounts, see cups in a gallon.
Big-batch soups and stocks from YouTube often come in quarts. Import the video into ReelMeal and switch Units to Metric, and quarts show as liters.
